 Welcome to Flora.cyberia

This site currently contains 767 high quality photos from plants of Europe and of the Canary Islands. All plants are photographed in their natural environment.
 NEWS
07.03.2008 - Honouring the work of all the contributors to Wikipedia, each species page of Flora.cyberia now features a direct link to the appropriate Wikipedia page (if such a page is present).
16.03.2006 - Added some specied from southern Portugal.

26.09.2005 - Now autumn are closing in on us, with it's cool air and pale blue sky. There are still some flowering plants around, but soon they will all be gone. Still, we have the photos from a past summer to give some warmth in the cold and barren season to come: today I've added a buckload of new species that are quite common in southern Sweden.
Several of them, like Arabidopsis thaliana, Erophila verna and Corydalis pumila flower in early spring, whereas Digitalis purpurea, Calystegia pulchra and Sedum reflexum come to bloom later on.
Hope you will enjoy them! See all in the recent additions.

Pancratium maritimum

24.08.2005 - Pancratium maritimum is certainly one of the most beautiful and exotic species of Europe. The long, shining white petals give the flowers an exotic look, more like a tropical species. Obviously, there is a close relationship with the Spider lilies (Hymenocallis) of North America.
Pancratium flowers on sandy beaches throughout the Mediterranean, and as far north as Bretagne, in late summer, when almost everything else is dry and barren.

With this species, a new country is introduced at Flora.cyberia: Portugal.

Tragopogon pratensis 18.08.2005 - Finally, after a long pause, I've added another 47 pictures to Flora.cyberia. All of them where taken in southern Sweden in spring and early summer this year, and among them are such interesting species as Ophioglossum vulgatum, Corydalis pumila, Plantago coronopus, and Valerianella locusta. For an overview of all, refer to the recent additions.

01.07.2005 - There are many new photos awaiting to be published on Flora.cyberia, but since I leave for a trip to Portugal in a few days, you have to be patient some time yet.
As a small compensation, I've added some new Zoom pictures: Linaria repens, Lonicera periclymenum, Rosa dumalis, Sedum acre and Tragopogon pratensis.

27.04.2005 - There is not much happening at Flora.cyberia for the moment. This is because me and my family are moving from Wiesbaden / Germany to Karlskrona / Sweden. As soon as we have set up our things and organized a reasonably fast internet connection, I will publish more new pictures.
It's springtime in south eastern Sweden, and after a relatively long and cold winter, there are flowers and grasses coming up everywhere. :-)
Polycarpaea robusta 19.01.2005 - First new plants of this year are some interesting species from the beautiful volcanic island of Lanzarote. There are serveral species endemic to the Canary Islands, and even to Lanzarote, like Polycarpaea robusta (to the left), but also some more widespread species, like Reichardia tingitana.
06.12.2004 - Added a new section Zoom Pictures, where you can zoom into some high resolution plant pictures, to better see the details. Currently, there are only four species (Adonis vernalis, Mesembryanthemum cristallinum, Orchis conica and Verbascum nigrum), but if there is further interest, this section will be expanded.
Requires Flash.
13.10.2004 - Added another four german species, still flowering in the beginning of october. See them here.
Narthecium ossifragum 24.09.2004 - So, now it's been almost two months since the last time Flora.cyberia presented new photos. This time there are some more species from Småland (Sweden), including the beautiful Narthecium ossifragum.

28.07.2004 - Added another eleven plant species. With these species, another 5 families (Alismataceae, Amaryllidaceae, Selaginellaceae, Onagraceae, Verbeanceae) are represented at Flora.cyberia.
And I'm also very happy to announce that the country of France now also is represented with it's first species at Flora.cyberia: the fern Phyllitis scolopendrium.
I've just started scanning some of my slides from Provence, southern France, and will publish these pictures as soon as possible - so, if you find the time, check back for more french specialities ;-).

Melanargia galathea 23.07.2004 - Added some more butterflies, including the very beautiful Melanargia galathea, a personal favorite of mine. See them all in the butterflies section.
14.07.2004 - Added a handful of older pictures, from scanned slides. The quality is therefore not extraordinary good, but there are some interesting species among them, like Dictamnus albus and Trapa natans (the only Flora.cyberia plant photographed in cultivation).
See them all in the recent additions.
Lychnis flos-cuculi 09.07.2004 - More additions from Wiesbaden, and one new species from La Gomera: the miniscule Asteraceae Gymnostyles stolonifera.
08.08.2004 - So, the curtain was just drawn from the section of unidentified plant species. There species are shown, that I have not been able to identify myself. If you can identify any of them, please let me know.
For the moment there are a handful species from Andalucia, Spain, for you to have a closer look upon.
08.08.2004 - Finally, there is not only Vanessa cardui all alone in the butterflies section, but two new species, Hesperia comma and Lycaena phlaeas.

07.07.2004 - Added some common species from Wiesbaden.
Flora.cyberia is now with 590 photos coming very close to the 600th picture. Worth celebrating, isn't it? ;-)

19.05.2004 - Removed the message board. It was only collecting junk anyway.
17.05.2004 - More additions from Mainz and Wiesbaden, including the quite special Adonis vernalis.
14.02.2004 - First additions in the year 2004: Serveral new species from Småland and Öland (Sweden). See them all here.
31.10 - The Flora Europaea query links are back! Now you can once more check the taxonomic status and geographical distribution of each species with a single click. On each species page, just look for the link reading "Flora Europaea query", which opens in a separate window.
It's as simple as that.
29.09 - Right now, Colchicum autumnale and Reynoutria japonica are flowering in Central Europe, marking the end of the flowering season. Autumn is at hand.
But Flora.cyberia won't stop publish new photos because of this. There are still a load of photos from southern Sweden coming, and in the slides archive a lot of pictures are still waiting to be digitalized. There are especially many slides from southern France, from the beautiful region of Provence. So check back soon ;-).
Dryas octopetala in the german Alps

20.09 - The mountain of Nebelhorn in the Alps of southern Germany has a very diverse flora.
On lower altitudes there are lush meadows with Gentiana lutea and Campanula barbata. Further up Gentiana bavarica, Veronica aphylla and Saxifraga moschata are flowering between boulders and debris.
Close to the summit Cystopteris alpina and Saxifraga caesia grows in the cracks and on the wind swept ridges.
See them all here.

Gentiana purpurea in the austrian Alps

05.09 - On a hot summers day in july I climbed the the mountain Großer Widderstein in the Alps of western Austria. Today the photographs are published, including the beautiful Gentiana purpurea. You find all of them here.

Parnassia palustris in the german Alps

01.09 - Added 20 species from the meadows of the mountain-range of Fellhorn-Schlappholt in the south german Alps.

Some species where already published in the South Tirol section, but the new pictures are of better quality.

30.07 - Flora.cyberia has now a new section showing butterflies. Not much to see there yet, but this section will grow along with the rest of the site. Have a look.
Hope you find the pictures enjoyable :-).
22.07 - Have just returned from a trip to the northern Alps. Will asap publish series of new photos from such interesting genera as Saxifraga, Gentiana, Aconitum, Achillea, and so on.
So be sure to check back soon.
Geranium palustre 22.07 - Added some quite common Central Europaean plants, like Stachys officinalis, Galium verum and Geranium palustre.
Check the recent additions for details.

05.07 - Thanks a bunch to Bert Blok, sending me a complete list of the dutch flora. All dutch names in Flora.cyberia are accordingly from this list.

Bert also has a nicely done website focusing on the flora and vegetation of the Netherlands, including many photos and descriptions. Why not pay a visit?

03.07 - Added some mainly urban species like Coronilla varia and Diplotaxis tenuifolia. See the recent additions for details.
07.06 - Added some meadow species from Wiesbaden and Mainz.
Crocus vernus in Kleinwalsertal 26.04 - Alpine spring: See the new photos from the woodlands of the valley of Oberstdorf (Germany) and the subalpine meadows of Kleinwalsertal (Austria).
Ophrys tenthredinifera 23.04 - Added the last charge of the Andalucia photos, this time including Ophrys bombyliflora, Ophrys ciliata, and perhaps the most beautiful of them all, Ophrys tenthredinifera.
For all the new photos, check as always the recent additions.
Ophrys fusca 09.04 - Added some more species from Andalucia, including Ophrys fusca and Ophrys lutea. There are more Ophrys-species coming, so don't stay away too long ;-).
For all the new photos, check the recent additions.
09.04 - Looked through the archive with photos from South Tirol the other day, and found several new species, and some better photos of the already published species. See the recent additions.
Anemone nemorosa in Wiesbaden 02.04 - Spring in Central Europe. Over large areas are now flowering Anemone nemorosa, Primula veris and Luzula campestris. As for example in Wiesbaden...
Tetragonolubus purpureus in Andalucia 26.03 - Added another 20 species from Andalucia.

23.03 - Since this start page has been growing a lot during the past year, I've decided to put the families and the countries and sites on their own pages, and at the same time introduce a left hand side navigation.
Hope you find Flora.cyberia as easy to use as always - or perhaps even easier ;-).

Plants of Andalucia

16.03 - The first photos from Andalucia, Southern Spain, are now online.
More photos are coming soon, including several Ophrys species, so be sure to check back.

23.02 - Since the Flora Europaea database has moved (or better: disappeared), all the species query links had to be removed. Sorry about this.
